Umi is Associate Director of the Institute on Domestic Violence in African American Communities (at the University of Minnesota). Previously she was project director for the Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board where she provided leadership to two federal demonstration programs addressing the needs of children who live in homes where there is battering.

For over 20 years, Umi’s work has focused on issues related to redressing the economic, political, and social status of traditionally disenfranchised and marginalized communities.
